ABOUT YOUR COURSE:
James will begin the day with a talk about the history of topiary and will give a practical demonstration on the techniques of cutting.
He will share the inspiration of topiary in garden settings from embryo plans to finished topiary and also be giving tips on care and maintenance. He will demonstrate his techniques on cutting and explain about the short cuts to creating strong shapes. The day will conclude with a hands-on workshop and you will have your own topiary plant to take away.
For those with little or no experience and for those who have taken a related course. Suited to those who would like a structured introduction to a subject, with further building of skills to work towards independent practise.
ABOUT YOUR TUTOR:
James is a specialist in Sculptural Topiary, creating new and innovative shapes, as well as classical or traditional Topiary designs. James’s topiary has been featured at The RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court, Wisley and London, he has won several awards.
9.00–9.15am Registration and coffee.
9.15am Morning classes

5.00pm Classes finish
West Dean will provide a plant for you to create your topiary specimen.
A notebook and pens/pencils
A pair of secateurs and gloves
Outdoor clothing and boots/shoes suitable for wet weather and working outdoors
HEALTH AND SAFETY:
The tutor instructs students in health and safety issues relevant to this course. There are no health and safety restrictions on access to this studio/teaching space in the absence of the tutor. All Personal Protection Equipment, apart from footwear, is provided by the College.
